Did Not Attend (DNA) Policy – NHS Oral Surgery Referrals

Purpose

When a patient misses their appointment, it is referred to as a ‘Did Not Attend’ (DNA) or Was Not Brought (WNB).

During 2021/2022, nearly 7.5 million NHS outpatient appointments were missed by patients.

Reducing missed appointments helps to ensure that clinical time is used effectively and means patients on the waiting list can be seen more quickly. This supports delivery of the National Health Service’s “Elective Recovery Plan”

Scope
This policy applies to all NHS patients referred to the Oral Surgery Clinic from their General Dental Practitioner (GDP).

Policy Statement

  • NHS patients will not be charged for any missed appointments (Did Not Attend – DNA).
  • If a patient fails to attend one scheduled appointment without prior notice, they will be discharged back to the care of their referring General Dental Practitioner (GDP).
  • Following a DNA and discharge:
    • The patient will not be automatically offered a further appointment.
    • The referring GDP will be notified of the non-attendance and discharge.
  • Patients who wish to be seen after a DNA must:
    • Contact their own GDP, and
    • Obtain a new referral to the Oral Surgery Clinic, including a new Unique Reference Number (URN).

Communication

  • This policy is available on our clinic website
  • This policy is on display in our waiting room
  • Referring GDPs will be notified promptly of any DNAs and subsequent discharge.

Review
This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure compliance with NHS guidance and local commissioning requirements.
